As my fifth-grade child sought more independence, the question of providing a smartphone arose. However, experts like Jonathan Haidt suggest waiting until at least eighth grade due to potential negative impacts on intellectual and social growth. Considering alternatives, we opted for a kid-friendly smartwatch, balancing safety, ease of use, and limited functionality. Devices like Bark and TickTalk offer parental controls that restrict contacts and monitor communications without full internet access, reducing risks of cyberbullying and overexposure to digital content. Smartwatches are also less expensive and easier for children to manage compared to smartphones. While concerns exist about dependency on technology, our experience shows that a smartwatch fosters independence while easing parental anxiety. The decision ultimately depends on individual child maturity and family values.
